Our Mission

Lacordaire Academy is an independent, college preparatory school rooted in the Catholic Dominican tradition serving a diverse student body: coed Pre-K-8 and young women in grades 9-12. A challenging curriculum combines academics, athletics, appreciation of the arts and community service to empower students to develop their own gifts and talents. We accomplish our mission by working in a collaborative manner engaging the entire Lacordaire community.

Our Belief

We believe that…

1)     Our faith in God, rooted in our Catholic Dominican tradition,
promotes social justice and community service through a strong, values-centered education.

2)     Understanding, appreciating and respecting diversity are critical components to the development of a peaceful and vibrant society both local and worldwide.

3)     Each member of the community has a responsibility to respect, preserve and protect the environment.

4)     Effective education develops the whole person: spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and artistically.

5)     Students are entitled to a supportive, safe and nurturing environment in which they can grow, learn and express themselves confidently.

6)     A challenging curriculum develops the critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to make informed and ethical decisions.

7)     A school thrives as a result of the shared responsibility of the governing authority, teachers, parents, and students.

8)     Encouraging life-long learning is essential for success in an increasingly complex and ever-changing world.

9)      Each member of the community possesses gifts and talents and the diversity of these gifts is respected and cherished.

10)   Our dedicated faculty prepares students for life as independent thinkers, confident decisions makers and responsible leaders.

Our History

In 1894 Dr. Morgan W. Ayres built his gracious home located on three beautiful tree lined acres of land at the corner of Lorraine and Park in Upper Montclair. Twelve years later the  Ayres homestead, which consisted of the large main house, the carriage house and grounds, was sold to Mr. D. N. Force.  In 1920, the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, under the direction of Mother M. Avelline, bought  the houses and property. In that same year, the Sisters established  a French-English school for girls which they named Lacordaire in honor of the French Dominican preacher, Pere Henri Lacordaire.

The school opened with two pupils. By 1923 there were 30 pupils in the grade and high schools. In 1946 a wing was added to the carriage house for  the growing grade school population. By 1961, a new brick building housed the all girls college prep of Lacordaire H.S. The former main house is now the convent residence for the Sisters.  .

Today, in the charming carriage house, the co-ed Lacordaire elementary school students attend classes and learn amid the beautiful surroundings.
