February 10, 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It’s been a great week--the Giants win the Super bowl, parent/teacher conferences, 2nd grade reconciliation,  commitments from a new and talented incoming freshman class, and of course the Semi-formal! The Lacordaire experience on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis remains exhausting and, at the same time, invigorating. We are fortunate to be able to take part in the growth of all of our students. Daily we share their laughter, concerns, and tears. In some cases, we experience all three emotions with the same student within hours. The best part is that we are close enough to recognize when we need to be involved and when we simply need to provide time and space. Our culture is what makes Lacordaire so special and our community invaluable!

The highlight of the week for the Upper School is yet to come. The past few days have been dedicated to transforming the gym into a “Carnival” type atmosphere. Congratulations to the Executive Board and Student Council for what is going to be a wonderful evening. Moreover, thanks to all of the faculty chaperones, their spouses, and to our internal DJ, Mr. Santana.

I would also like to say how proud I am of the students and the way they handled the teacher feedback surveys. We asked the students (7-12) to provide us input on how we can be better teachers; the responses were insightful and respectful. The common trend is that they are challenged and are being well prepared for the next level in the educational process. Furthermore, they want continued technology in the classroom. Add tonally, there were some minor areas that we need to address, and we have already begun that process.

In the Middle School Religion class, the 7th graders were placed in groups, and each group portrayed the virtue of the month, trustworthiness, to a different lower grade class. Each student learned about this virtue through a teacher directed activity and then performed a skit based on that activity. The 5th graders have been discussing the different images of God, the different names we can call Him, and how they can be seekers of God.  The sixth graders are studying the Kings of Israel, King Saul, David, Solomon and are evaluating their leadership qualities. They reflect on these discussions to discern how they, themselves, can become good leaders.

In the Lower School today, the second grade celebrated the sacrament of Reconciliation. Students and parents were invited to the convent for a service filled with prayer and song, which included individual confessions. Msgr. Nydegger and Father Cruz led the ceremony while Sister Catherine Gerard accompanied the children on guitar. May God continue to send special blessings on these students in our sacramental program and their families as they prepare for First Holy Communion.

The Academy Gala invitations are out. This very important event provides us the opportunity to honor those who have served and dedicated themselves for the good of Lacordaire Academy. The proceeds of the Gala are critical to our sustainment; we need your support. Please see the attached information on our LA Gala!  The gift giving party is rescheduled for 1 March at Basket Night.  Thank you for your commitment to and support of Lacordaire Academy!
